![]() This scheme has obvious affinities with the heavenly assumptions of Enoch and Elijah (Gen. There Hercules mounts his own funeral pyre, and, while it is burning, he is assumed into heaven accompanied by a thunderclap. The second quote is from Apollodorus’s account of Hercules’ ascent into heaven. In Aeschylus’s play Eumenides, Apollo speaks at the foundation of the Athenian high court, the Areopagus, and declares that death really is the end: ‘there is no resurrection.’ That is why justice must be done. The first, about the permanence of death and the impossibility of resurrection, is drawn from Greek theatre. The three quotes at the start of this chapter illustrate just how diverse were the ancient views of the afterlife. The same sort of diversity existed in antiquity. And there are of course major variations between different branches or schools of thought in these great religions. There is a world of difference between the Orthodox Jew who believes that all the righteous will be raised to new individual bodily life in the resurrection, and the Buddhist who hopes after death to disappear like a drop in the ocean, losing his or her own identity in the great nameless and formless Beyond. There is a world of difference between the Muslim who believes that a Palestinian boy killed by Israeli soldiers goes straight to heaven, and the Hindu for whom the rigorous outworking of karma means that one must return in a different body to pursue the next stage of one’s destiny. Even a quick glance at the classic views of the major religious traditions gives the lie to the old idea that all religions are basically the same. To begin with, beliefs about death and what lies beyond come in all shapes and sorts and sizes. But what does resurrection mean? How does resurrection fit into Jewish hopes for the future? What did the apostles and evangelists mean when they told stories about Jesus coming back to life? What historical value can we give to their accounts, and how best can we present that case? And what differences might it all make for the way we think about mission, discipleship, and human flourishing? Ancient religions and the afterlife The God of Israel resurrected Jesus he did not merely revive him back to mortal existence, but transformed him into a glorious and bodily mode of existence. But it was not the end of the story: according to early Christian testimony, God raised him from the dead. Jesus was crucified no historian doubts that. But the modified 396 at the top of the line provided 375 horsepower, the most ever available in an El Camino. There were three 396 engines available for the SS model, and the first two (which were rated at 325 and 350 horsepower) were carryovers from the previous year. When looking at specifications, the car wasn’t that much more powerful than the top performance option offered in 1967, but giving the SS label as an option to El Camino showed that Chevy did view the truck/car as somewhat of a performance machine in addition to it being a practical hauling vehicle. The hood also was noticeably longer and the rear of the cab featured a recessed window.īut perhaps the most noticeable addition to the car was the new SS396 model. Among the changes was a longer, 116-inch wheelbase, which subsequently provided a longer El Camino that measured 208-inches. Almost all of the changes echo the changes made in the Chevy Chevelle sedan and wagon, which had provided the platform for the El Camino since 1964. With that said, the changes that distinguished the third-generation El Camino weren’t all that drastic upon first glance – which still, of course, presented a car/truck hybrid that many car buyers had found both attractive and practical. ![]() So the introduction of the 1968 car may have been somewhat of a shock to those not accustomed to Chevy changing the El Camino. Sales had been impressive for almost every model year, but did slip a bit in 1967. ![]() Since the second-generation El Camino had been introduced in 1964 (following a three year break from the end of the first generation of the car), the car/truck hybrid had been changed very little, with any alterations made as part of a slow evolution process of improving the car. ![]() Kit: I recommend the kit as whole if you are looking for a kit to add as a routine or if are a beginner and don't know where to start or are afraid of big heavy lashes. We understand how critical public transportation is to our county and we are taking every possible step to maintain the highest levels of service possible.” – Brandon Freeman, SMART Local 0023 A new referral program is the latest step in turning all current staff into recruitment agents and I think this really shows the commitment we have at METRO and within SMART Local 0023 to our community. “By offering a higher starting wage, industry leading benefits and rich incentives such as a $4,000 hiring bonus, every effort is being made to bring on new operators. Furthermore, to increase the pool of talent METRO has also implemented an Employee Referral Incentive Program for current employees in the amount of $2,000 if they refer a Bus Operator candidate to the position, which will be paid out over a two-year period. This is equal to a total compensation, of $94,863 ($51,126 in wages & $43,737 in benefits), in year one alone.”Īnother incentive METRO is offering is a $4,000 hiring bonus to all new Operators that will be paid out in three installments, $500 after completing training, $1,500 after completing probation, and $2,000 one-year after completing probation, in aims of attracting new talent. This along with temporarily eliminating the training wage, has increased the starting wage in total by 8.5%. Additionally, in lieu of negotiating the SMART Local 0023 contract this year, we have agreed with the union on a one-year increase of 3.5%. One such idea is a pilot program that temporarily eliminates our Step 1 training wage so that new operator’s salaries start 5% higher. “We are striving to create new ideas to recruit and retain talent. “At METRO we are facing the same challenges with recruiting Bus Operators as our sister transit agencies,” said Dawn Crummié, METRO HR Director. Additionally, METRO will continue to offer a 5% yearly salary increase for the next six years on an 8-Step progression period. Now new Operators will have a starting salary of $23.75 versus the previous rate of $19.97. Along with this extension is a pilot program with SMART Local 0023 that eliminates the trainee rate and increases the starting salary rate for new Bus Operators from the original Step 1 rate to Step 2. In May 2022, the METRO Board of Directors approved contract extensions for all three Union’s representing METRO. “Here in Santa Cruz, under the direction of our new CEO, Michael Tree, SMART Local 0023 and HR Director, Dawn Crummié, have been empowered to implement new and creative solutions to attract new operators.” All through the state, agencies are finding themselves short on people and becoming increasingly more overtime reliant,” said Brandon Freeman, SMART Local 0023. “We are living in a time when public transportation is facing an unprecedented crisis in staffing levels. If you played the original all those years ago then nostalgia will go a long way towards exploring the early days of the series once more, but if you came on board some time after Rome II was released then this might feel too dated for your liking.Total War: ROME REMASTERED lets you relive the legacy that defined the award-winning strategy series. Will you enjoy it? That largely depends on where you’re coming from. The terrain looks rather nice, as do the lighting effects, and although it may not look like a 202x release they’ve made a substantial leap forward from the original game. The new 4K and UHD resolution support can’t hide the fact that – even with the improved textures – this is an older game, and it mostly shows in the character models. This includes a better view of the battlefield thanks to improved camera controls and UI enhancements like a new tactical map, as well as control over additional factions. If you’ve played any of the recent games then you can tell that UI is a topic that’s been much improved since the days of Total War: Rome, and even though this remaster isn’t quite as refined it’s certainly a step up from the original.įeral Interactive, who took care of the remastering duties here, also added a few features that were never in the original game. And where the original UI would have fallen short, the remaster adds a few tweaks that make things easier to manage. Look at it when compared to some of the more recent entries in the series, and you’ll miss some of the nuances in the gameplay and you’ll consider the visuals somewhat dated at best.Īt the end of the day, however, Total War: Home holds up – just like the first Civilization from 30 years ago is still brilliant despite all the advancements we’ve seen in visuals and gameplay since then. Look at it side by side with its original, and you’ll see a lot of polish when compared to Creative Assembly’s first outing that was truly 3D, built for 2004 hardware – which is about 10 generations of GeForce tech ago. How well you’re going enjoy it depends largely on what you compare it to. Therein also lies the “problem” for Total War: Rome Remastered. It’s a remaster of one of Creative Assembly’s most acclaimed titles, but also to the lasting appeal of the Total War franchise as a whole – where Three Kingdoms is still going strong with new content and Warhammer III looms on the horizon. ![]() ![]() Going back much further in time is Total War: Rome, which prior to its new remastered version was launched way back in 2004. For those on Xbox or Stadia, or those who missed it on PS4, this is a title you won’t want to miss. For them, the upgrades will seem too small to justify the price tag. The only thing that’s holding us back from an unconditional recommendation here is the fact that a free upgrade to the PS5 version isn’t included for owners of the PS4. There’s DualSense support, but it lacks some of the subtlety that we’ve seen in other PS4 titles. Of course these visual boosts come on top of the usual enhancements that we get with next gen versions: an improved framerate (a stable 60 fps instead of the original’s 30 fps) and drastically reduced load times. Both the city of Kamurocho and the people that inhabit it benefit from the extra horsepower with enhanced detail, better lighting and more realistic character and building models – for a game that aims to be both cinematic and visually realistic the improvements are noticeable and worthwhile at the same time. The main draw for this new version isn’t in the game’s mechanics or content, but in its technical merits. This won’t be a reason to rush out and buy the game if you’ve already played it though, since there’s no additional story content and the DLC is limited to cosmetic items and consumables. Judgment for next gen system is essentially the very same game, although it does contain all of the available DLC content as well. This newly released version isn’t just an HD Remaster of the original game, it also brings it to new platforms with the Xbox Series S/X and Stadia.Īs we pointed out in our original review, Judgment is a well-executed spinoff for the Yakuza franchise that all fans of the main series will want to play despite the differences in approach to gameplay. ![]() It hasn’t been that long since Judgment came out on the PS4 in the summer of 2019, but until now it wasn’t available for any other systems – including the next gen ones that were released since then. Today we’re looking at two critically acclaimed titles that are back for another run: Sega’s Judgment and Total War: Rome both return for another round and we were keen to check them out. ![]() The remarkable artistry, the way they play with gravity and space, the way they help to tell the story. The finicky, LucasArts style conundrums have been replaced with more physical, action-based puzzles, which means you spend far less time standing around in befuddlement.Īll of this gives players more space and time to appreciate Psychonauts' level design. The difficulty curve is more gradual, and the game further complements this with a wide array of accessibility aids. Levels still vary in length, but are broken down into digestible segments that minimise frustration and boredom. You always know where you need to go, either because the game visibly places your objective in the distance, or provides a clear path that lets you feel out the route. A few are just miserably hard, such as the infamous Meat Circus.Īll this is fixed in Psychonauts 2. Some levels are too long, while others are unclear as to how you're supposed to complete them. This is particularly important in the context of the first Psychonauts, which is similarly stuffed full of clever ideas, but struggles to execute them in ways that are consistently fun. The result is a gradual and consistent unveiling of each level's story, rather than having it fed to you in chunks by audio-logs or expositional graffiti. Such use of juxtaposition and metaphor runs right through Psychonauts 2, with the game often using two conflicting or overlapping ideas at the foundation for its various worlds. Here, Raz must convince Hollis' 'heart' to stop 'racing' on its own, and instead acknowledge that help from other people is a good thing, thereby stopping her from rushing off in the real world and doing damage both to herself and others around her. At one point Raz enters Hollis' "Cardiology Department", which has been converted into a horse racing-style betting shop where the horses have been replaced with card suits. But it's the way the level represents the process of Hollis' mental change, and how Raz attempts to undo the damage that he's done, that makes it such a brilliant example of level design as storytelling. Taken broadly, it's a simple juxtaposition. When Raz starts messing around, however, the hospital transforms into a casino, representing Hollis' increased impulsiveness and recklessness. Prior to Raz's mental meddling, Hollis' consciousness is represented as a hospital, a clean and orderly space where thoughts are treated with care and consideration. Perhaps the clearest evocation of that is Hollis' Hotstreak, wherein Raz deliberately manipulates the mind of a Psychonauts agent so she'll allow him to go on an important, possibly dangerous mission. Instead, Psychonauts 2's worlds are designed to communicate a specific idea at a conceptual level, one which builds over the course of the player's time in that place. This wonderful phrase was coined by Matthew Castle in his review of Psychonauts 2 to differentiate from the concept of 'environmental storytelling' which has been mocked into oblivion by a thousand jokes about putting skeletons on a toilet. These are specific, cumulative references designed to tell the player what is happening in this particular mind. And not in a vague way, like how other games use floating islands as an all-purpose metaphor for a fracturing reality or mentality. Moreover, everything within these spaces serves a purpose, either functional or representational. The same goes for the disgusting tooth-doors in Dr Loboto's mind, or the prismatic rainbow bridges in the Psi-King's rekindling consciousness. For example, in Ford's Follicles, the liberally scattered hairdryers are not just silly set-dressing, they can be used to create new pathways through the level. Firstly, like a dream, each world has its own functional internal logic that makes sense while you're in the dream. But there are several features of Psychonauts 2's dreamlike worlds that prevent them from feeling like randomness for the sake of it. Such wild variation could easily descend into incoherent nonsense. Some of the ideas Psychonauts 2 cranks through could serve as the basis for entire games. There are worlds made of hair, worlds made of teeth, cooking gameshows with hand-puppet hosts and anthropomorphic food. Its levels are a delightful medley of bizarre visions, a whirling carousel of fantastical, grotesque and carnivalesque spaces. Even Dishonored 2, which has some of the best level design around, reverts to floating islands for its "Void" sections. It's a trope you'll see everywhere, from games like Arkham Asylum and Spider-Man, to Doom Eternal and Bioshock Infinite. Most mainstream video-games struggle with surrealism, evidenced by how many of them resort to floating islands as shorthand for 'weird'. ![]() For more information about Wizards of the Coast or any of Wizards' trademarks or other intellectual property, please visit their website at .
